OPPORTUNITY SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Quality Manager, the Lab Supervisor, has the overall responsibility for the personnel, safety, environmental impact, quality, cost, and performance for the labs within the mill facility. In this position you will lead and coordinate efforts and activities utilizing your knowledge and experience to achieve key performance metrics that support overall mill goals.
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK:
- Assures the specifications of products and processes meet product quality and workmanship standards consistent with the standard operation procedures of the company, mostly through accurate and timely product testing and reporting including waste water management which must meet both the company's standards and regulatory requirements.
- Supervise all lab testing by carrying out all oversight responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. These tasks include training, planning, scheduling, and organizing the technicians to meet all job requirements, adhering to product specifications and ISO requirements.
- Responsible for troubleshooting paper test lab, including after-hours support. Responsible for purchasing, installing, and starting up new paper test equipment.
- Coordinates calibration of paper test instruments, including internal calibration checks and service visits by suppliers.
- Responsible for providing quarterly RPTA samples for potential food packaging contaminants, and for testing weekly & monthly Collaborative Testing Services samples to maintain reference to other test labs.
- Generates reports and maintains filing/record system and other required documentation for all testing and reporting.
- Maintain economic use of lab supplies, equipment required for departmental operation, and employee's time.
- Meet with lab personnel for performance discussions and annual performance reviews.
- Fulfills and duties or responsibilities requested by the QA Manager, Technical Manager, Operations Manager, General Manager and/or other management personnel.
- The Lab Supervisor also performs other sampling/tests and duties as needed, such as purchase requisitions, paper sample requests, and test roll calibration.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field is preferred
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of pulp/paper mill experience
- Direct supervisory experience is a plus
- Experience implementing safety initiatives
- Proficiency in computer skills including MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SAP, JD Edwards)
- Knowledge of SDS, where to locate and how to use
- Knowledge of Industry Standards
- Demonstrated progression in leadership and/or areas of responsibility
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills leveraged to motivate stakeholders and achieve alignment across the organization
